A 2010 graduate of Upson-Lee High School, Coach Winkles returns home to lead the program where his athletic journey began. Following his graduation, he continued his football career at NC State from 2010 to 2013 before returning to Georgia to build an impressive coaching résumé across several successful programs.

Coach Winkles has contributed to multiple deep playoff runs throughout his career, including several second-round appearances and an Elite Eight finish at Pike County in 2017. His coaching experience includes stops at Pike County, Spalding High School, Upson-Lee, Warner Robins, and Harris County. Throughout his career, he has served in key leadership roles such as Defensive Coordinator, Co-Defensive Coordinator, and Strength & Conditioning Coordinator.

In addition to football, Coach Winkles has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing student-athletes across multiple sports, serving as a head coach in both wrestling and track. Known for building physical, disciplined teams, he brings a comprehensive approach to program development, emphasizing strength training, defensive excellence, and multi-sport participation.

As a student-athlete, Coach Winkles set a high standard of excellence. He is a former State Champion, All-State football player, and All-American wrestler—accomplishments that reflect the competitive mindset he now instills in his athletes.

“Coach Winkles brings a passion for Upson-Lee and a proven track record of success both on and off the field,” said Upson-Lee High School Principal Mr. Ricky English. “We are excited to welcome him back to lead our football program and continue building on the tradition of Knight pride.”

Upson-Lee High School looks forward to the leadership, energy, and experience Coach Winkles will bring as he begins this new chapter with the Knights.
